Scratching My Head and Wondering What Has You So Excited.

I was reading through the archives of an old blog that has long since been abandoned and I noticed that there was a time in the blog-o-sphere where people had a tendency to not only call each other out (as though that's ever stopped) but to claim victories that they couldn't possibly have. It's odd when I read people taking victory laps over arguments that they didn't win because their target walked away or stopped listening to them and just deleted everything they wrote. I've decided to chalk it up to one of those things that I will just never get.

So what about you? What's the thing that you find out there in our hobby that has you scratching your head and wondering what the hell's going on?

  1. I think there are folks out there that take this stuff much too seriously (I am guilty of it myself sometimes) Just roll the dice and say something awesome..
It always makes me shake my head.

    1. I have to agree with Mark. I think we're all a little guilty of taking it too seriously, but this is just a hobby, and a very fun one at that. But, there's no point in getting worked up over anything that happens within this hobby. Just play. Sure, debate and discuss, but don't get your panties in a bunch over anyone being overly passionate. It's not worth the time or energy.

  2. The weird response I see sometimes where someone suggests an approach, an option, a new technique, and others respond that this new method is an attack on the way they play, denigrating & devaluing their gaming, and should have presented equal advocacy for their play style. That's a subset of taking things too seriously mentioned above. But I do think its unnerving how defensive some people can be.

    1. Agreed. I think we see it most when new editions of games come out. Certainly D&D comes to mind first, but I've seen this kind of thing with new editions of other games as well. Never fails to boggle my mind.

    2. It is strange when people react with such vitriol over each of playing the hobby our own way. It's as though they believe that there is only one style of play that is acceptable and all the others are bastardizations that should be purged from the world.

It happens with other games too? For some reason I always find myself deluded into thinking that this sort of attitude is inherent to D&D. I guess it's because it's the big dog in the room, so to speak, and gets the most attention.

    4. It's rare, relatively speaking, but it does happen. I seem to recall some fuss over newer editions of the HERO system at some point, and possibly even T&T. But D&D does seem to incite the most disagreement. Probably because each new edition attempts to do something differently, rather than just updating the existing rules.

    1. Please report to the nearest Confession Box. There is no such thing as WrongNewFun. WrongNewFun is a treasonous rumor spread by commie mutant traitors. Any discussion of WrongNewFun will result in a personality readjustment. Have a nice day. -- Friend Computer

  4. Never mind nerdrage. I'm not a big fan of scorched earth tactics. When it comes to leaving a community, especially in our hobby, way too many writers and bloggers with awesome content just vanish and take all their toys with them just to spite maybe one person. All the while there is plenty of neutral readers who get shut out. Deleting stuff you spent valuable time on to share with others only hurts yourself and prevents others from discovering something new.
