Awesome Writing Advice from Brian Micheal Bendis

The problem is, whenever I write, all I get are complicated science fiction gimmicks and plots driven by plot devices. My characters are super flat, so the story comes out looking like a bad episode of Star Trek. Advice?

Don’t do that :-)

Do some writing exercises that are just about your characters. just work on developing them as characters. that doesn’t mean how they dress or what they look like but the choices that they make. the character. the voice

Put them in a situation different from the one you are writing. see what they do. see what it is that you like about them. and watch them come back into your story and completely rip the plot apart.
