Gen Con Strangeness

This morning I was looking at the Gen Con website, lamenting the fact that I won't be there yet again, when I noticed that the sponsors for this year's Gen Con are Paizo and Mayfair Games. What I find so odd about that combination is that last year Wizards was one of the sponsors for Gen Con - which is cool and all - but this year, with the launch of the new edition they're not.

It seems so damned peculiar that this years Gen Con wouldn't be essentially the Wizards and Mayfair show (let's be honest, Mayfair ain't going anywhere).

Am I wrong here?

  1. I don't think you're wrong. That is odd. I wonder what kind of deal was hashed out between the powers that be--or things just haven't been finalized quite yet.

    1. I don't know, and it's bugging the shit out of me.

  2. Didn't Wizards not even have a booth at Gencon last year? With the big splash of 5th Edition (I think we can safely call it that now that "D&D Next" doesn't seem to be in the title of the new PH), I suppose they feel they don't need to be a sponsor this time around. It does seem somewhat niggardly, though; sponsorship can't cost that much, at least for a big company like WotC.

Then again, perhaps they will be a sponsor, and it just hasn't been officially set up yet.

I think that the initial report was they didn't have one but it seems like I read that they had a very small presence in the retailers market. I could be wrong about that last part though.

It certainly seems like they're waiting a while to announce it.
