I've Come to a Decision

Over the last year I've worked really hard to improve my writing to the point where I'm not embarrassed by it. I'm fairly confindent that I'm at the point where I can now attempt to get some of my writing published. So among my many plans this is going to be happening.

I just need to find the right place to submit. Any ideas?

  1. Here's the free advice from some guy on the Internet who also wants to get published (again) has made money (a little) from writing:

    1. Research the markets where you want to get published. The print media for sci-fi is shrinking, but there's a number of online websites emerging. The Writer's Market is a decent place for initial research.

    2. Prepare for rejections even if your stuff is publishable.

    3. If you feel your stuff is good enough, even after all of those rejections, perhaps you should self-publish.

There's lots of better advice at A Newbie's Guide to Publishing.

    2. I second his advice. I follow a couple blogs of writer/editor types, and have been courting the business for a few years. My wife is also doing this thing and follows way more publishing blogs than I do. <_<

Prepare to be ignored like you have never been ignored in your life.

    3. Yeah, that's the one side of things I'm not really looking forward to, but it's just part of the business I suppose.

  2. Depends. What, exactly, are you writing? Short stories? Novels? Fantasy? Scifi? Horror?

I might have some concrete suggestions with a better-than-average chance of acceptance, depending on the specifics.

    1. I've got two short stories. One is a fantasy hop and the other is a short detective thing; both are short stories in their format.
