Let's Play a Game . . .

Here's the game. In the map above that I'm going to be using for my next adventure there are quite a few things different about it from the traditional maps of the region but if you're familiar with the area at all you should be able to tell where it is and roughly when it takes place. So the question is: In what nation is the adventure being set? Bonus points if you can tell me why it's set there.

  • First correct answer receives 50 meaningless Dyvers points and an imaginary pony named Carl that never gets tired.
  • Second correct answer receives 25 meaningless Dyvers points and an imaginary pony named Bill. Careful, he bites.
  • The third correct answer gets an imaginary sandwich made of sand, liverwurst, and hate on Pumpernickel - the bread that hates you as much as you hate it.
Good luck!

  1. I'm guessing...generic, Europe-like medieval region #12? I mean look - there's a desert right at the edge of a bay. There are numerous forested areas.

    Am I right? I'm right aren't I!

  2. Welcome back, Charles! Love the handcrafted Greyhawk map. You talk about Dyvers a lot on your blogs, but this map seems to be more about Nyrond and the Great Kingdom... so I'm wondering if the campaign may be related to the Greyhawk Wars and Ivid.

    I hope I win Carl!

@Adam Dickstein - You do know that is the World of Greyhawk, don't you? As in, Gygax's Greyhawk. And yes, deserts can occur right next to ample water. Just ask Saudi Arabia.

    2. Yes Greyhawk. Like I said - Generic Europe-like medieval region #12.

As for forests and desertsee not far from each other, and large bodies of water - I was kind of making a joke. That's a story with a humorous climax. You know, just FYI.

We could also argue fantasy c world ecologist versus real world biomes for another dozen comments. Seems like a waste though.

    4. With a handle like Dickstein, it's hard to tell if you are being funny, sarcastic, or just a Dickstein.

  3. Good to see you posting again. Just based off how the map is centered, I'd say Nyrond or Almor. As to why the adventure is set there, I'm not sure. I'm no Greyhawk historian. The last time I ran a PC in WoG was in the 80s and our group pretty much stuck to the area between the Crystalmists and Wooly Bay. I did notice Almor doesn't show up on some maps of Greyhawk that are floating around the Internet so, if I had to hazard a guess, maybe the adventure ties in with the circumstances surrounding Almor ceasing to be a nation.

  4. The Duchy of Urnst, with forays into the Cairn hills. You're finally getting around to running The Star Cairns, The Crypt of Lyzandred the Mad, and the Doomgrinder. Maure Castle might be the capstone of the campaign.

The Great Kingdom of Aerdy has begun its expansionist phase, seeking to unite the rest of the Oeridian kingdoms under its power. Dyvers and Greyhawk are outposts in the wilderness at this time.

  5. It's Greyhawk before the Greyhawk folio-map was produced.

    1. True, Holmes! But the question was what state is the adventure taking place in?
