February Artfest: Reckoners by Brom

Reckoners by Brom
I remember when I first started seeing the covers of those Dark Sun books back in the early nineties and I thought, what sort of hellish world am I being exposed to? Then as saw the woman in the green bikini top I thought, a fucking great world.

February Artfest: Bluff by Brom

Bluff by Brom
I read once that some fool was complaining about the worlds that Brom brought to us through his art. They were too dark and dangerous for this individual. I would argue that without the worlds of Brom that many of us would never have imagined the brutal realities of our fantasy games.

By the way, does anyone else wonder what the woman in this picture is bluffing?

[NSFW] February Artfest: Web of Charms by Brom

Web of Charms by Brom
Thinking about the art of Dungeons and Dragons without talking about Brom is like talking about breathing without talking about Oxygen.

His artwork haunted my young mind and inspired me to pick up my first pen and scrawl out a sketch of my nightmares. And while I don't believe that this piece was ever published for Dungeons and Dragons it exemplifies my internal vision of Lolth.

God those green eyes are just haunting.

Friday Artfest: Morgan le Fay by Brom

Morgan Le Fay by Brom
One of the great travesties of modern gaming is that Brom no longer draws dominates the art associated with Dungeons and Dragons. Just look at this gorgeous illustration of Morgan Le Fay!

The bodies hanging behind Morgan Le Fay seem to sway to an unearthly breeze as she steps forward onto the raised platform chanting some ancient spell that almost certainly will bring down a kingdom or two. The swords jutting out of the ground behind her like spindly crosses from a hastily dug grave add to the mystique of foul powers. While the rising mist behind her seems to cast a demonic glow. Here is how a sorceress should be! Not a sexualized object for pubescent boys to abuse themselves to, but a woman powerful in her glory; with arms outstretched like death reaching for your immortal soul.

It was a sad day when Brom parted ways with TSR.
