I'm looking into Rary and Robilar for an upcoming post and I'm kind of stumped on resources. Does anyone know of some good resources to use for researching the duo?

Hawk & Moor perhaps - I haven't finished reading it yet, but it does seem to go into who played what characters back in the early days
ReplyDeleteIn the early days of 3e, Gygax wrote a series of articles for Dragon magazine detailing some of the adventures Robilar had. Not sure which issues, though--its been a long while.
ReplyDeleteIf you can get a hold of it, "Rogue's Gallery" has Robilar's stats with a bit of background.
As for Rary--I'm not certain unless you don't mind me referring you to AD&D 2e sources.
I actually would prefer the 2e stuff if you've got any in mind.

You think maybe, just maybe, the whole storyline where Rary betrays the "Circle of Eight" may have been inspired by certain, real life, events...
Obviously Rary the Traitor (2e) has the most background about those two. City of Greyhawk boxed set does a small bit on Rary. Later 3e developments are all taken with a grain of salt (such as Robilar in Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk), but there was also a good Rary/Robilar article in Dungeon (98?) by Creighton Broadhurst.
ReplyDeleteYou've probably already checked these out but the Dragonsfoot forums with EGG and Rob Kuntz, and Rob's blog, also cover a lot of their antics. I think an early S&T or Dragon had a report on one of Robilar's adventures involving some iron golems. The only things that stick for me are that Robilar had an army including a lot of orcs along with humans, and I saw something about the Rary PC being retired at a certain level because he wanted to be "Medium Rary" -- though I am not sure what level/class would have the title "medium" -- maybe an OD&D cleric?

Those are all of the published canon or near-canon references that I am aware of up through v3.5. My database currently does not include fan produced materials such as Oerth Journal, Dragonsfoot, Canonfire! or blogs. Nor does it include anything published only on the WotC website (I got tired of fixing broken links). Some RPGA Living Greyhawk material is included, but I currently do not have access to most of it.
Early material on Rary is sketchy because he was a PC belonging to Brian Blume who retired him at 3rd level to forever remain a bad pun. There is a Wikipedia Page with a fair amount of background.
Robilar was one of Rob Kuntz's PCs and there is a wealth of lore surrounding him. Some of it can also be found on Wikipedia
Wow! Thank you so much!
