Working on the Blog

I'm hammering away on the blog for the next few hours trying to make it look better than the warmed over piece of dog poo I've been dealing with visually for the last few months. Hopefully by the end of it you'll see something that looks a hell of a lot better and that doesn't break your computer screen through sheer hideousness.

Right now the borders of the blog are set at 1500 pixels. Is that too wide for everyone or is that showing up in an okay manner?

  1. I've been tweaking a lot of the same designs. I think I've found that with widescreen laptops, the typical resolution is 1280-by-800 px or 1366-by-768 px. That seems to be fairly standard these days for 13" - 15" laptops, so I went with a 1200 px width for my blog (to allow for window margins and browser UI). 1500 may be a bit wide for laptop users.

  2. I should amend that... 1500 is not too wide for laptop user because the content is still visible.

1500 is too wide for laptop users with OCD because the scroll bar with just a smidge at the bottom will drive them bonkers.

Don't ask how I know this.

    1. It's now 1330 x 420 I believe. I decided not to see how crazy I can make some people with OCD who may like owlbears . . .

    2. Yeah, I was going to note that you may need to consider the gutters that some of the blogger templates automatically add. Even when the blog content is contained within 1300px, blogger adds another 40 to 50 px (or more) in left and right gutters.

It really annoyed me on my own blog because I spent quite a lot of time trying to get it perfect in a 1280 width layout and gave up and just cut out those last 80 pixels to make it narrow enough.

Looks good, but I will miss the giant crayfish. Always reminds me of Hommlet. :)

    3. Yeah, I liked Trampier a lot, but it was time for something new. I'm working on some others so that I can change the banner every so often (maybe once a quarter?) so that it doesn't get old looking and boring.

    1. I thought it was time for a change too. I had a really cool tank picture with the shell exploding out of it that I was going to use but Blogger felt that it was too much. Stupid blogger.

  4. As long as you keep the left column (articles & comments) 800px or less, I don't care what you do with the overall dimensions. I usually set my browser windows to 1024x768 on the desktop, and my tablet has an 800x1280 screen. either way it is a decent fit if the column of text that I spend the most time looking at fits comfortably into 800px. I don't mind scrolling to see the blogroll or index & tag cloud columns
