WizKids, Dungeons and Dragons Attack Wing News, with Pictures

This afternoon I noticed that WizKids retailer assets page had updated with information on the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons Attack Wing program. Here's what I was able to find out.

The Starter Set

This morning WizKids updated their retailer pre-order page and a lot of information about the new Attack Wing Dungeons and Dragons miniatures game was released in the process. We now have a price, release date, and the figures that will be out with the Attack Wing Starter Set. The Starter Set will be released October 1, 2014 and will include 3 figures: 1 red dragon, 1 blue dragon, and 1 copper dragon. The figures will come with a plastic base and peg to mount the figures with. There will also be 3 maneuver dials, cards, and tokens included in the box. The expected retailer sale point is $49.99 per set.

The Green Dragon will be $24.99 and will include the figure, base, pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens.

The Sun Elf Wizard comes with the base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens. It will be me one of the more affordable solo figures released so far with a price of $14.99.

This beautiful Frost Giant figure will come with a base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards and tokens. Like the Green Dragon above the Frost Giant will run you $24.99 (and I will be buying it).

This group of six Sun Elf figures will run $24.99 and will include bases, pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards and tokens.

This group of six Hobgoblin figures will run $24.99 and will include bases, pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards and tokens.

The Dwarven Ballista is $14.99 and will come with the base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens. It will be cheaper solo figures released.

The only two pack of figures in either wave is not wasted on these figures. These wraiths are just exquisite. I love everything about them from the way that they look to their body postures, to the horns on top of their heads. At a price of $19.99 these two figures are the most affordable buy out of the first wave and come with bases, pegs, 2 maneuver dials, cards, and tokens.

Wave Two

Only three figures have been announced for the second wave of Attack Wing at this time. Each figure is predicted to be released on December 3, 2014.

This outstanding Black Shadow Dragon, with its iridescent purple mouth, makes my third must buy from the Attack Wing series and will run $24.99. It will come with the base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens.

The Movanic Deva Angel is $14.99 and will come with the base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens. Just out of curiosity does anyone recognize that term, Movanic? I've never seen it before.

The Aarakocra is $14.99 and will come with the base and pegs, 1 maneuver dial, cards, and tokens. Out of the figures being released this one shows the greatest deviation from the older versions of the creature and if it presages the new version come from Wizards I have to say that I'm really looking forward to it.

  1. I would say interesting ... I've never played with HeroClix miniatures but these intrigue me a lot. A question for those who know the game, but prices look right or a little high?

    1. From what I've been able to tell they're reasonable.

  2. Prices actually seem pretty on par for this type of game. The X-wing game which uses similar rules and setup has a $40 starter. Single fighter style ships have an msrp of 15 with the larger ships running 25 to 30

    1. Is the X-wing game fun? I've never played it but it has tempted me far too many times.

  3. I wants it! However, with the release of 5th edition this summer, I have to wait. Even though I haven't played any of the Attack Wing games, from what I've seen and read, it seems like a lot of fun.

The prices are in line with the other Attack Wing games. The starter set will go online for $35 - $40, the expansions will be $10 to $20. I wonder if I'd rather put the money toward some actual rpg miniatures as opposed to this. Decisions, decisions. Sigh.

    1. I'm having a hard time finding cheap, new miniatures out there right now. Seems like prices have really jumped in the last few years . . .

  4. X-Wing is a blast. Easy to learn, difficult to master, and squad-building is a mini-game all its own. Not to mention the models are nicely detailed.

My only concern regarding the D&D Attack Wing game is scale. Fantasy Flight Games, manufacturer of X-Wing, is careful to produce all its fighters to scale with each other. But I can't tell from the pics here whether the humanoid minis will be in the same scale as the dragons, or whether D&D Attack Wing will be "box scale" with the figures made to fit the packaging, so you've got an elf about the same size as a dragon

Right now there is nothing on the flyers that provides us with scale. The box dimensions are TBA so we're really in the dark right now. :(

    2. I don't believe we need to have too much concern with scale.

I'm willing to bet that WotC is going to require the dragon models be in the 28mm scale so they can be used not only with the Attack Wing game, but with the D&D rpg as well. They would be incredibly stupid if they made the dragons too small for D&D table top play since that would likely cut out 25 - 50% of their consumer audience. A lot of people will likely buy the sets for the dragons alone (i.e. - may not be interested in the game, but just want the dragons for D&D).

    3. It would be foolish of them to make the dragons too small, but it would be nice to have dimensions this early in the game.

  5. "Movanic" is the one angel in AD&D that I don't know the origin of. Monadic from "monad", Astral is obvious, as are Planetar and Solar. As far as I have been able to find out to date, "Movanic" is a Gygaxism. That may not be correct, but I haven't found Gygax's source for the term.

    1. So it isn't something new?

      I wasn't sure.

    2. All of the Devas (Movanic, Monadic, and Astral) were first presented by Gary Gygax in Dragon #63 in a "Featured Creatures" article, then "officially" published in Monster Manual II.

    3. Cool.

I've got that one. Off to read it now!

    4. If you've got Dragon #64, the "Featured Creatures" in that issue presents the Planetar and Solar, which are the next up the scale of Angelic entities. Those are also in Monster Manual II. There are a ton more Angelic entities in the original Manual of the Planes, so you might look for that if you are interested.

  6. I can't say for sure, but I think someone misspoke. THis is based on Star TREK: Attack Wing... Not X-Wing. Star Treck AW is produced by WizKids- as is this game, X-Wing is produced by Fantasy Flight.

Yeah. The X-wing thing came up in the comments because it was used as a price comparison point and the conversation moved to "is that a fun game" territory.

    2. And Star TREK: Attack Wing is made using the game system developed for X-Wing under license from Fantasy Flight. So, technically they're correct.
