Adventurers, Go Fuck Yourselves.

Day 01

The bar smelled like stale vomit and a million other cliches that you've read since birth and never wondered why they still hold true. Yet here I was, standing in the doorway as every eye turned on me, wondering why places like this never seem to go away entirely. The names change but the place never does.

Fuck, let's not waste time pondering the question and just call it part of the human condition.

I made my way over to a corner - since that's where they would expect to find me when they came staggering into the bar after they've spent all their cash and are looking for work. That's when they'll come walking into the bar with the worst name looking for a stranger in a dark corner hawking a map or some other bullshit that might offer them a chance for easy cash and an early grave. I was going to be that stranger in the corner if it meant that I would have to burn down every bar in town.

You see I had a plan that these fucking assholes wouldn't be looking for: I was going to kill all of them and take their stuff. I've been doing it for seven years with Sigmund Kathy, the Savage Minotaur of Ebony Plains. We hooked up back in '02 when Carlyle's Traveling Freak Show closed down after Carlyle got carved up by his boyfriend's wife.

Tragic, really. I swear it broke my heart for all of two whole minutes. I even shed a real tear at his funeral when they buried him with a solid gold watch. Of course Sigmund and I dug it up later that night . . .

Ah, but I'm getting distracted thinking about the past. It's too easy to do that when you're drinking sipping whiskey waiting on the inevitably belligerent dwarf, his mysterious - and obviously misunderstood - drow companion to come in through the door with their idiotic halfling trying to steal from anyone that isn't looking at her. Then as they talk to me about the quest I've got for them their leader, a charismatic and morally superior fighter, will barge into the conversation (uninvited I might add!) to throw a cold towel on the deal. They should really outlaw that sort of person from coming into town.

Day 02

Have you ever wondered why no one looks at a waitress and tries to marry her?

Sitting here in the Unicorn Piss - I cannot explain to you how appropriate that name really is - I'm watching the two serving girls busy themselves about the bar and cannot stop watching Molly. She's a vision of beauty as she spins out of groping hands and performs her job with the sort of quiet competency that most people forget about. I want to walk over to her and ask her out. Perhaps we could go down to the river this weekend and watch the sunset as the cultists of the Old Ones drag their latest offering to the shores and drown them in their own blood?

Maybe she would like flowers?

Day 03

They came in last night while I was in the pisser!

I had been drinking too much, trying to build up the courage to ask Molly to this weekend's Shrew Burning, and the necessary called. So up I went and in they came. They were sitting with Farmer Benoit talking in hushed tones about the spiders that have been eating up his sheep. Left before I could even get over to them with a better story!

No matter. Tonight after the bar closes down I'll help Benoit home and murder his whole family in their sleep. That should teach the dumb son of a bitch to fuck with my livelihood.

Day 04

I got a letter in the post this morning from Sigmund. It seems that he's been having quite the time over at the abandoned silver mines. According to the post he's enslaved a tribe of goblins and two bands of gnolls. He's demanding that I call him Generalissimo Kathy "the Destroyer" Esquire.

I've no problem calling him Generalissimo, he's got a small army at his disposal now, but to imagine himself a lawyer? It's an outrage that that flea ridden, illiterate, cow fucking mongrel would put on such airs. Will he expect me to bow to him next?

That miserable couch lining is pushing his luck too far.

The Book Shelf: The Killing Floor by Lee Child

I finished The Killing Floor, by Lee Child, last night. It's the first Jack Reacher novel and not at all a bad read. As far as the writing goes Child has a knack for keeping tight action sequences interesting and enough questions are left open that you'll find yourself assuming that the wrong man is guilty at key points in the story.

I like that.

What I don't like is the way that he tends to belabor certain points in the book. Like when he has Jack looking at a series of financial books. It's supposed to be one of those pivotal moments in the book when the main character has an epiphany that allows him to unlock a major question. Instead it reads like a man calling out the card catalog in an old library.

All and all it was a good book in spite of the few pages here and there that were bogged down by Child's need to spell every action out. Worth picking up at a used book store if you can get it for less than three dollars; otherwise I'd recommend that you check it out from the library for free.

Laser Guns and Pirates for the Win!

Flying through space on a galleon and wondering why your cigar smoke won't escape into the nothingness below you isn't a fun way to do Dungeons and Dragons in space, but it's how many of us have been suffering through the game when we dare to leave the confines of our gaming world.

Why?

Why do we allow ourselves to be hamstrung by the idea that we must hold to the conventions of a medieval world even when we're bringing in futuristic technology? Why do we roll our eyes and nudge each other at the very idea of playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons IN SPACE?

I've dealt with it myself (see This Will End Well Part 1: Bad Ideas and Whispered Threats for more) and every time that I run across it I'm a bit mystified as to why the two concepts should be so alien to one and another. Perhaps this is one of those times when I'm out in the weeds but why is it so easy to accept that a man can conjure up a poisonous gas out of thin air, and that he then unleashes that vile miasma on fictional creatures that defy logic and any semblance of evolution, yet the idea of this same person climbing into a rocket and dashing off to Mars is viewed as a fucking joke?

I would love to know why we can accept the one and not the other.

This Will End Well Part 1: Bad Ideas and Whispered Threats

"I just don't get why it has to be on a spaceship," Poot's voice crackled through the three hundred miles of piss poor cell reception. "I mean you're asking them to play fantasy characters but you're starting out in space."

Yeah.

"Then what?"

I'm going to blow up the damned spaceship!

"So they're going to fall to earth in an escape pod."

Call it a breach pod.

"No. They're falling to earth in an escape pod."

Faerun. I'm doing this by the book.

"What fucking book has a spaceship getting attacked and it's crew hurtling down to the planet while you rub your hands and laugh manically?"

The Book of Akins.

"Good book," he said after a pause. "I still wouldn't do it. You're testing out a new system and you haven't fully got a handle on the way combat works."

What's to get a handle on? Roll a d20, check against AC, hit if equal or better.

"You're doing it again."

What?

"You're being a glib asshole and you know what happens when you get like this before the game starts."

That's why I called, I said as a pause in the conversation took over. I've got a new player and New Boy's coming along for the ride.

"Who's the new player?"

Tesla.

"If you go with the spaceship you'd best be prepared for a wipe in the first ten minutes then. Tesla isn't going to leave without a laser gun and a robot."

Icarus will be there too.

"Complete wipe."

Okay then. It looks like I'm going to start them south of Baldur's Gate and we'll see where they go from there, I said as I pulled into Icarus' drive. I'm here Poot. I've got to go.

"Good luck."

Tesla, Icarus, and New Boy got busy making characters once I came in while I busied myself looking through Icarus' Dungeons & Dragons books. I always forget how many Third Edition books were made until I run into a collection like Icarus'. There are books on dragons of every imaginable stripe; volumes on devils, demons, and the undead; five monster books filled with variations on themes; twenty or so books with rule variations and expansions; two Player Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guides - presumably without rehashing what the previous version said; and massive, linear adventures that were bitched about on the internet when they were released and are slowly growing in popularity as people give them a second look now that the system's been dead nearly seven years. I won't lie to you, I had some of them, but Icarus' collection dwarfed mine completely.

"Charlie," New Boy called me from the dinning room table, "can you give me a hand for a minute?"

I walked over and we worked his character into a passable fashion that wouldn't embarrass either of us (I hoped) and were quickly joined by Icarus and Tesla. Icarus would be playing Selin the elven Cleric of Apolo ('cause why the fuck not?) while Tesla would be playing Kaz the human Fighter of badassery. That left New Boy with his dwarven wizard.

"I'm here to kill something and take it's shit," Tesla said with a smile.

A man after my own heart, I said and launched into the set up. We were going to be playing in the tiny town of Philander on the Sword Coast of Faerun. There were about three hundred or so people living there and they had been enjoying what passed for drunken debauchery in this community until their coin had run low and decisions had to be made.

"Well since I don't know anybody I'll be at the bar drinking and looking for work," Tesla began.

Nope. I'm not doing this bullshit where you guys pretend not to know each other for the first hour I'm here running because you want to dick about. I've driven too far to waste my time watching you guys jerk off with nothing to show for it.

"Fair enough," he said with a smile. "What's going on in the bar?"

There are two prostitutes on the upper floor smoking and talking amongst themselves: Bea and Alice the One Eye.

"Why's she called Alice the One Eye," New Boy interrupted.

Because she's only got one eye.

"Oh."

There also the bartender, Joe, who's busy cleaning the counter. Other than that you cats are the only ones here.

"Who else is in the bar," New Boy asked.

I stared at him for a full minute while Icarus laughed at him and Tesla whispered death threats in his ear. Two hookers on the upper deck, the bartender, and the three of you.

"So no one else is here?"

I was suddenly very glad that Biggboy, Step-up, and Cuz weren't able to make it tonight. To the north you have Baldur's Gate and to the south you have Waterdeep. To the east you have the interior of the continent and no telling how long before you make it to the next city.

"I'm going west," Tesla announced after he rolled a dice.

Into the sea?

"The sea? No, no, no, no. Who said anything about going west into the sea? I said I'm going north to Baldur's Gate."

This is going to be one of those nights, I said to Icarus, isn't it?

"I've no idea what you're talking about."

Right, I've walked into a bag of dicks. Well, let's get this show rolling.

Feel like you've missed something?

Heading Off to Play D&D.

I'm heading out to play D&D and will be bringing back pictures. I apologize for nothing.

Sadly, You Piece of Shit, You're Blocked

God, this has been a strange day in my feed.

I started out the morning writing about a fun little mash-up that's been banging about my head for weeks (see The Starship Whatsitsname for more) and then followed it up by running into about a dozen people who were gnashing their teeth about their "cause."

I said, I like killing ogres, orcs, and anything else I come across in role-playing games; not because they represent the other, but because I like killing things to earn experience points. It's a fun mechanic that let's me jump off buildings, onto a dragon's back, slit it's throat, and ride it's plummeting carcass into an exploding volcano.

"But you could have just as much fun sitting in a room pretending to be molested by your father and discussing your feelings about the imaginary event! Why we've got this game where -"

Let me stop you right there. I'll play spaceship games where I'm blowing up planets. I'll rescue bystanders in a Supers game without a second thought. I'll even raise the dead and start my own necromantic army to fight your Ogres in the Valley of the Three Forks. But if you think for one minute that I'm going to play a game like that then you've completely misunderstood why I play games.

I play them to unwind and have fun - often killing imaginary creatures by the thousands - not to learn deep emotional lessons about how I would react if my Dad decided to diddle me. Who the fuck even does that?

Creepy.

"Oh, sure you'll slaughter imaginary elves but you won't even examine your own emotional . . ."

Nope. Not why I play games.

Wait? Why did I get blocked?

The Starship Whatsitsname

I'm running my first game of Dungeons and Dragons Basic tonight and I'm really thinking about making it a mash-up between a Metamorphosis Alpha style dungeon in space game and the Forgotten Realms. Magic would be partially a mutation effect brought on by deep space radiation; partially the ship's artificial intelligence getting bored with the normal human biology and experimenting to see what sort of mutations it could bring about within select populations; and partially the mystification of futuristic technologies by a now primitive human population that has created self-identified races that it now uses to determine tribal affiliations. Monsters would be humans who have mutated physically.

I'm not sure but I feel like the game would have to begin with the death of Elminster and then an explosion in the aft deck levels 34-56. Give the players lots to worry about . . .

I'm in a mood today.

Blog Notes Q2, 2014

The First Quarter Report for this year allowed me to focus on the health of my blog and to identify the strengths and weaknesses in how I'm writing in relation to my audience. It also told me a lot about how I was responding to people who commented on individual posts and how that interaction affected different aspects of the blog. I found it really interesting and it provided a level of transparency that I really liked. So I've decided to continue doing these quarterly reports for the foreseeable future.

Before moving on I would like to thank everyone who shared my posts on Reddit, EN World, Google+, Twitter, Facebook, and the numerous forums that service our hobby. I really appreciate that you all thought enough of the things I've written to share them with your friends and communities. Thank you all.

The Second Quarter of 2014 was by and far the best one yet for the blog to date and I find it hard to imagine that I will be able to top it for the rest of the year, if not ever. During this quarter I published the second annual Great Blog Roll Call and have added twenty new blogs to the roll call since its initial publication with an additional thirty-six more to add in my backlog. I saw two posts published during this quarter move into my top five all time posts - which surprised the hell out of me.

I also began using Adsense with my blog on June 26, 2014 (see What's with Them Moving Pictures? for more). I debated including this information on the blog but it appears that no one shares their actual successes and failures with the system; so I'm going to do so below. Additionally, if I ever launch a Paetron program I will be including those numbers on these reports as well so that I can continue to be as transparent as possible. Perhaps I'm wrong for sharing this information but I find that being transparent about what's going on with the blog helps me understand what I'm doing and avoids the sort of crazy accusations that plague other bloggers who attempt to monetize their blogs.

Performance on Established Goals

Daily Posting Schedule:  Unlike the previous quarter I did not live up to my daily posting goal by any measure. I missed posting 7 times in April, 7 times in May, and 2 times in June. I can positively state that had I maintained my daily posting goal better that my numbers for April and May would have been drastically improved as I have not had a post with less than 82 page views during this quarter (a personal best for the blog).

Comment Response Time: Excluding the Blog Roll Call I have been able to maintain my 24 hour turnaround time on the majority of comments.

Statistics of Note

         | Posts | Comments | Google +1s | Page Views |

May      |   45  |    430   |     737    |   13,312   |
June     |   48  |    660   |     768    |   12,110   |

Days Without a Post | 16
Total Page Views    | 35,366

Q1 v Q2 Comparison

                      Q1  |   Q2   | Difference
Total Posts      |    204 |    163 |     - 41
Total Comments   |  1,092 |  1,575 |    + 483
Total Plus 1s    |  1,767 |  2,087 |    + 320
Total Page Views | 21,276 | 35,366 | + 14,090

Continuing the practice I established in Q1 I've elected to only analyze the page views for the months directly included in this quarter and not the entirety of the blog. Starting in Q1 2015 I will be changing this so that I can better see which posts are continuing to draw more content throughout the year and which ones begin to stagnate; as well as, provide an accurate picture of the overall health of the blog throughout the year.

Listening and Debating

This evening I've been listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn's concerts on youtube and trying to decide if I want to run a post apocalyptic game of run and gun or something more in my traditional wheelhouse. I don't know if I'm just restless right now or if it's because I want the full system for fifth edition before I start running D&D again. Then again it's probably because my group hasn't been able to get together for a minute and I'm just really wanting to kill the shit out of everything right now.

Off the Record

This morning I recieved an e-mail from a reader of mine with this really fascinating story that involved a semi-famous role playing games author, a transvestite, two pounds of cocaine, and a deserted alley in Chicago. The story was absolutely hysterical and the guy told me that I couldn't share any of the details with the world.

The Trouble with War

Recently I introduced a war into my home game. Two factions aligned against each other and they began fighting in the capital of Bissel, Th...
