Captive Planet by Clyde Caldwell |
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love Clyde Caldwell. His beautiful illustrations haunt my dreams and inspire my games to this day, and none so much as this cover from the Star Frontiers book, Captive Planet. Just looking at that phantasmagorical dragon in the background is enough to launch a campaign and to keep me running a space faring role-playing game for years.
Your thoughts?
All I want a frikkin' dragon with frikkin' lasers on his head! Caldwell is a pulp artist's dream. His newest work was on the latest Gygax Magazine cover incidentally. Love this illustration! Thanks for showcasing it.
ReplyDeleteI know! I almost picked up the magazine on his cover alone! He's really something else, you know?
DeleteI think I still have my copy of that Endless Quest book lying around somewhere...
ReplyDeleteWas it a good book? When I ran across it, I never had the money. And when I had the money, I never ran across the book.
DeleteI don't know--I hadn't read it since 5th grade, but I still have a bunch of those Endless Quest book somewhere. I do, however, remember for some reason being disappointed that the monster on the cover didn't appear in the book... but I'll have to check.
DeleteI just posted a review of Captive Planet over at d20 Dark Ages for your perusal. The dragon with lasers does appear in the book, but I never got to it--back then or now.
DeleteThanks Stelios! I'm heading over there now.
